About
This is my website. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
Anything I want to share publicly I keep in this website; mostly writing, software projects, and maybe some maths. I prefer to share here rather than in social media, according to the IndieWeb's principles.
Everyone knows the web sucks. I try to make my site suck less by using semantic HTML and CSS with no JavaScript, checked with the W3 validators.
Unlike many websites, this one was made by a human. Not a corporation, not AI, a human being. If you are a human too, welcome! (And if you are an AI crawler, fuck off.)
Name
nagbu is just my internet moniker, my real name is Hernán Ibarra Mejia.
What does “nagbu” mean? Well, that's the matter of some debate. The word is a transliteration of a Sumerian word, appearing in the opening verse of The Epic of Gilgamesh, written over three thousand years ago. There is a paper discussing the possible meanings of “nagbu”, which settles on “abyss”. When I chose the name though, I thought it meant “deep”, as that was the word used in my copy of the poem.
Me
I grew up in Lima, Peru. I went to the UK to study pure mathematics, first in Sheffield and then in Cambridge, for my bachelor's and my master's respectively. Afterwards, I had a one-year stint as a software engineer. These days I'm only working on some personal projects, including this website.
Nevermind the faces, the landscape, the inescapable music, and, of course, the love. Those are better left for a longer biography.
